A legacy (also referred to as a bequest) is a gift left in your will. The gift may take the form of cash or other assets such as property and may be left to a person, organisation or both. There are three different types of legacies.
A residuary legacy is a gift of the residue of your estate. The residue is the amount left over after all of your debts, expenses and specific legacies have been settled and your dependants (children, grandchildren, siblings etc.) have been provided for.
A specific legacy is a particular named item left as a gift - for example, a piece of jewellery.
A pecuniary legacy is a stated sum of money that you would like to leave. The amount is decided upon at the time of writing your will. If you already have an existing will, we can prepare a codicil (amendment) which, once signed, is kept with your will.
